The Hive left in a buzz as bee sets off alarm

Workers at Shropshire youth arts charity The Hive were left in a flap when the intruder alarm was set off – by a bee.

Staff were called to the town centre premises, on Belmont, Shrewsbury, when the alarm went off and after investigations with the call-out engineer from Security Wise, the issue was isolated to a single bumble bee which was trapped in the alarm sensor of the garden studio.

The constant buzzing of the bee within the individual sensor had triggered the entire system.

The bee was caught in a heart-shaped tin which was immediately to hand and then released back into the great outdoors after its antics were over on Friday night. Habib Malik-Mansell, a spokesman for the Hive, said the arts charity had certainly lived up to its name last weekend but that it was now back to business as usual.

“It certainly is rather ironic and amusing that a bee coming into the Hive was found to be the cause of our alarm sounding last week,” he said.

“However, we’re definitely pleased that it wasn’t anything more serious or a genuine intruder. There were some colourful reels of cotton in the room and we think the bee may have believed that they were perhaps some form of Hive or home – as they have that appearance.”

The garden studio at the Hive, where the bee was located, is the new pop-up home of local fashion designer Jo Bloodworth, along with young photographer Ella Ruth Cowperthwaite. They will be based at the centre over the summer months, using the venue as a creative base.

Keep Your Home Safe

Keeping your Home Safe!

Homes with no security measures in place are five times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures. Good window locks and strong deadlocks can make a big difference, but the biggest Security Measure you could provide for you home is an Intruder Alarm System,

keeping your home safe from burglary. Here are a few tips:

  • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you’re just out in the garden, remembering to double-lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn key) Its tempting in the summer to leave windows open, but that’s tempting a burglar!
  • Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and away from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through the letterbox) and new scanning devices can clone your keys!
  • Install a burglar alarm, With App notification or our ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre) gives you piece of mind!
  • Install CCTV, We can provide you with your own web address and Apps to view your property while on holiday
  • Install good outside lighting
  • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property, or see if they will key hold for you?
  • Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied
  • Make sure the fences around your garden are in good condition
  • Secure bikes at home by locking them to an immoveable object inside a locked shed or garage
  • Keep ladders and tools stored away; don’t leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home
  • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property
  • Ensure rear fencing is in good repair
  • Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trim high hedges
  • Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with Immobilise (opens in a new window)
  • Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme (opens in a new window)
  • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows
  • Store any high value items (i.e. jewellery, passports) in a properly secured safe or bank vault

Doors and windows

In most burglaries, the criminals broke into the house or flat through the door, either by forcing the lock or kicking it in. So make sure your doors are strong and secure. Consider fitting a bar for extra strength; a locksmith can advise you on how best to do it.

Glass panels on doors are particularly vulnerable. If you have one on your door you could replace it with laminated glass, which is stronger. You can also buy a film in a DIY store that you can stick over the glass to make it harder to break.

Home security and DIY shops sell inexpensive, key-operated locks to fit most kinds of windows. Fit window locks with keys to all downstairs windows and those upstairs that are easy to reach.

Distraction burglary

If you’re not sure who is at your door, don’t open it. Check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming to be from i.e. gas, electricity, water and police. Use the telephone numbers listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider – Do not use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus. The ‘Waterboard’ no longer exists, it is an obsolete phrase used only by bogus callers.

We can provide you with Video Door Bells that will alert your phone so you can see and speak to the caller, weather your in or out!

Going away on holiday

Make your home look like someone is living in it:

  • Use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights and radios on when it goes dark
  • Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries
  • Use the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsafe’ service – they keep your mail for up to 2 months while you’re away. Mail sitting on your doorstep is a sign that you are away
  • Trusted neighbours may be able to help you by collecting your post, opening and closing curtains and they could park their car on your driveway, see if they will hold a set of keys for you incase your alarm activates.
  • Avoid discussing holiday plans on public social networking sites – burglars can use any information you post on there to their advantage

Telford top of the league for burglaries

It is the league table no town wants to top – the cost of burglaries on homes and businesses.

More than 11,000 burglaries have been committed in Shropshire since 2014 – as new figures show the value of property stolen by thieves is on course to rise for a third year running, with Telford having the unfortunate honour of being the worst hit.

Figures obtained from West Mercia Police reveal more than £11 million worth of valuables have been stolen over the past four years.

And the data shows the amount rose from 2015 to 2016 and was set to go up again in 2017.

Across Shropshire, the value of property stolen in 2015 was £2,540,054, £2,797,907 in 2016 and £2,797,042 for the 10 months up to October 2017.

These figures were lower than in 2014 when the estimated total value of items stolen in burglaries and aggravated burglaries recorded was £3,341,109.

A total of 11,138 burglaries were committed across the county, including 2,560 in 2014, 2,838 in 2015, 2,705 in 2016 and 3,035 up until October last year.

And on nine occasions a person was injured during a burglary in the past four years in Shropshire – including five of which took place in Telford.

Charity Victim Support, the independent charity for people affected by crime and traumatic events in England, says burglary can have an emotional impact on victims of the crime.

Spokeswoman Claire Powell said: “Victims tell us time and time again that they suffer far more than lost possessions when their home is burgled; there can be a lasting effect on the whole family.

“Burglary not only robs victims of their physical possessions – it can also rob people of their sense of security at home, a place where everyone should feel most safe.

“What’s vitally important is that all victims have access to the support they need to help them cope and recover.”

“Victim Support provides emotional and practical help to victims of all crimes, including burglary, whether or not the incident has been reported to the police.

Householders who are victim to burglaries are advised to get their homes secured as quickly as possible and to look at ways of making properties more secure for the future.

Ms Powell added: “Some security measures can be expensive, but there are other things you can do that cost much less, such as leaving lights or a radio on when you go out and checking that all doors and windows are properly closed and locked.

“Your local police station or neighbourhood policing teams may be able to arrange for someone to give you home security advice.” Anyone looking for support can contact Victim Support’s 24/7 support line number 0808 16 89 111 or visit via victimsupport.org.uk
